Satori Generation (さとり世代)

SATORI GENERATION: It means peole who were born in the late 1980s to 1990s, and does not have any interest in being rich. Satori generation are the people who grew during long term depression in Japan, after collapse of bubble economy. They have no interest in living prosperous, such as traveling abroad, cars and etc. They also think that result is much more significant than the process. However this term is not circumscribed to Japanese. So many people in the world started to have the same value as "Satori Generation" has. Korean people call this generation "Philosophical Generation"

Views vary from people to people about this generation. Some people believe that they are smart not to be obsessed with living abundant, and thinks that they see the future realistically. However some people are worried that those people should be the one who should take lead of consuming stuffs, but since they are uninterested in consuming, it would threat corporate's activity, and intervenes society from getting developed.

My dad asked me few days ago, if I know the term "Satori generation". Ofcourse, I knew this term before he asked me since I am part of this generation, and I understand those values that people in Satori generation has. However, when I told my mom about this term, and the meaning of Satori generation, my mom could not understand those people's value. She thought that if life is too hard to live, they should try harder to make it better, not giving up.

What I think is a bit different from my mom. I think it differs from people whether they understand Satori Generation or not because everybody has different definition of what happiness is. I believe that happiness is mentally, emotionally being happy and maybe being rich is something that makes life better but not an important factor in being happy. If someone is emotionally, or mentally sick and tired from working, they should stop working and look for something that they like, things that they can make themselves feel happy. One person only has one life. So why keep doing things that makes you unhappy, and waste time?

I somehow understand peoples who worry about Satori generation. It is true that economic recession can happen in the near future if people do not work because they are not happy, and do not consume a lot. Concerning the alternative points, I think it is important to make Satori generation to find the job that they can be passionate, and be happy with. That way, they would work happily, so people could lessen their worries about Satori Generation from not doing any economical activity.
